Reports to Director Cargo Operations

Overview:

We are seeking a highly driven and strategic Sr Manager Transshipment to lead our region’s transshipment operations. This role requires strong leadership, operational expertise and a proactive mindset to ensure the seamless flow of cargo, optimize costs and deliver on performance targets. You will take full ownership of transshipment strategy, execution and continuous improvement—acting as a central orchestrator among cross-functional stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

Leadership & Ownership

·         Lead the regional transshipment strategy, ensuring alignment with global and trade objectives.

·         Take end-to-end ownership of transshipment planning and execution across all ports and services within the region.

·         Drive proactive performance within the team, setting clear processes, expectations and accountability.

·         Represent the region in the Global Transshipment Community, shaping global strategy and leading local implementation.

Strategic Planning & Execution

·         Ensure optimal routing, space utilization and connection adherence for all transshipment cargo.

·         Pre-plan transshipment connections in advance for all incoming vessels, balancing capacity and operational feasibility.

·         Secure space on own and 3rd-party networks; proactively coordinate with stakeholders to impart control in case of constraints.

·         Coordinate contingency measures, including ad-hoc feeder procurement and rerouting where necessary.

Performance Monitoring & Optimization

·         Monitor transshipment KPIs and performance vs. targets; implement corrective actions where needed.

·         Identify and resolve structural or recurring transshipment challenges using data and industry knowledge.

·         Collaborate with Cargo Control to maximize utilization of vessel space and advance cargo connections wherever possible.

Cost & Budget Accountability

·         Full accountability for regional transshipment cost management including feeders, behavioral cost such as terminal storage / renomination / reefer plugging.

·         Lead the transshipment / 3P feeder budget planning process including volume and cost forecasting.

·         Ensure recovery of all out-of-pocket expenses from customers, working closely with Operations and Finance.

Process Standardization & Transformation

·         Ensure all SOPs are documented, updated and followed by the team.

·         Support global initiatives for process automation, standardization and systems / process transformation.

·         Ensure all special cargo approvals and documentation are completed prior to cargo arrival at TS ports to prevent bottlenecks.

Stakeholder Engagement

·         Act as a strategic partner to internal stakeholders including Trade, Marine Operations, Procurement, Logistics, and Area Operations.

·         Collaborate with the Cargo Operations Centre of Excellence on driving best practices and sharing knowledge.

Coordinate across regional, QSC, and Area counterparts to deliver high service levels and operational excellence.

 

Qualifications:

·         University Degree, Diploma in Marine Studies, experience as a Nautical Officer, or a similar qualification or experience in Liner Shipping or Logistics.

·         7+ Experience in container liner operations / supply chain / logistics or similar role. 

·         Fluent in written and spoken English. Excellent communication and negotiation skills

·         Knowledgeable in MS Office applications

·         With a highly analytical mindset, and the ability to work systematically under pressure

·         Drive process enhancements with an objective to achieve desired KPIs

·         Experience of driving automation and inducing efficiency

·         Ability to guide and train team members

 

Preferred but not mandatory

 

·         Functional leadership experience

·         Operational transshipment background

·         Previous knowledge/experience of Hapag-Lloyd systems/FIS

·         Experience in Africa Operations

·         Past experience of working on projects to optimize cost / enhance customer experience
