As such, the business is building competitive advantage through technology and digitising interaction with customers and its core operational processes. Against this backdrop, the Global One IT has a mandate from the executive board to lead the technology transformation of Hapag-Lloyd.

This role is based in Chennai which has just recently been established as one of 3 global IT hubs for Hapag-Lloyd and will be the global IT development hub. The Software Engineer is required to play a crucial role in helping Hapag-Lloyd to achieve its goals by successfully innovating and creating world class solutions while optimizing the costs as efficiently as possible.


THE ROLE 

Join us as a Cloud Engineer and take a key role in shaping the infrastructure behind one of Hapag-Lloyd’s business-critical systems: the PDF Creation Service. You will inherit a well-optimized, highly automated system from our team in Hamburg, Germany, and after a smooth transition period, take on full ownership for its management and evolution. This is your chance to work on cutting-edge projects, including a major migration of infrastructure to AWS and the integration or development of next-generation PDF creation software.

YOUR RESPONSBILITIES

  • Take end-to-end ownership of the PDF creation service, ensuring it operates securely, reliably, and efficiently.
  • Containerize applications using Docker and manage deployments using Kubernetes or ECS/EKS.
  • Leverage AWS services (EC2, EKS, S3, EFS, , etc.) for cloud-native solutions.
  • Software Engineering background, preferably with Java or Python
  • Monitor and optimize application performance and infrastructure costs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Follow secure coding practices and contribute to DevSecOps workflows.
  • Integrate 3rd party software solutions seamlessly into existing workflows or develop in-house alternatives where needed.
  • Take end-to-end ownership of the PDF creation service, ensuring it operates securely, reliably, and efficiently.
  • Build and maintain highly scalable synchronous and asynchronous interfaces to support business-critical functions.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Technical

  • Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other orchestration tools.
  • Solid understanding of DevOps principles and automation tools (Shell scripts, Terraform, Ansible, etc.).
  • Proficiency in AWS services – EC2, S3, IAM, RDS, ECS/EKS, CloudWatch.
  • Shell scripting experience
  • Experience with SQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server).
  • Familiarity with source control and branching strategies using Git.
  • Understanding of system design, distributed systems, and RESTful APIs.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to manage critical systems independently
  • Backend programming experience in Java / Python

Personal

  • Require 7+ years of technology experience with trending technologies.
  • At least 5 years of experience in design and development of software, experience with large multinational organisations is highly preferred.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proactive cost reduction, automation, and improvements in process efficiency.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Highly motivated and results oriented.
