Reports to Area Managing Director

Position Overview: Responsible for managing the implementation of Human Resources policies and programs encompassing overall objectives for human resources in the Area and subareas (if applicable) as well as personnel costs controlling. This includes employee relations, payroll and benefits, employment and staffing activities, recruitment, performance evaluation, training and compliance with employment laws, relationship with Unions and third parties Consultants. As a Senior Manager, the position assists the Director with strategic direction and contributes to the business wide strategy. He/ She is responsible for providing employees with guidance in handling difficult or complex problems and in resolving complex, escalated complaints or disputes. He/ She will assist both internal and external customers in resolving complex issues requiring specialized knowledge of a functional area and/ or broad knowledge across functions. The Senior Manager possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization in order to resolve complex issues or to build consensus. He/ She may supervise the work of other managers, supervisors and/or coordinators, as well as manage complex accounts, claims or customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with Area offices and clients to provide first class levels of customer service.
  • Manages and applies plans and programs for all Human Resources procedures, for personnel area and subarea (if applicable).
  • Assists with annual updates to compensation programs; maintains updated job descriptions; analyzes compensation as necessary
  • Applies and monitors performance evaluation program and revises as necessary.
  • Implements local HR policies or adapt Corporate one, where necessary
  • Ensures the compliance of personnel policies and procedures, including GDPR.
  • Conducts and/or coordinates the recruitment effort for all exempt and non-exempt personnel, students, and temporary employees, steers the preparation of labor contract and any other related requirement.
  • Ensure strict compliance of Hapag-Lloyd Guidelines & Policies
  • Work closely with other area Directors on process improvement and communication flow
  • Conducts and/or coordinates new-employee orientations; monitor career development program, employee relations counseling, outplacement counseling, and exit interviewing.
  • Plans, organizes and controls all employee related activities within the Area.
  • Keeps contacts and negotiate with local unions HR rules and regulations
  • Keeps contacts with Labor lawyers and Consultants
  • Support the Management in new projects and re-organization matters
  • Plans and organizes the training programs for the personnel within the area and ensures that all departmental and functional training requirements are fulfilled.
  • Promotes availability of learning opportunities to allow employees to take advantage of them, evaluates reports, decisions, and results of Area/subarea in relation to established goals. And recommends new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of Area and services performed.
  • Make certain that all departmental and functional training requirements are fulfilled. Supervises maintenance of en-rollment and records for all employees. Performs difficult employee related duties, including dealing with understaff-ing, refereeing disputes, firing employees, and administering disciplinary procedures and operational standards, poli-cies, and tools of HR services.
  • Manages the labor relations, assuring and harmonious climate, ensures the compliance of employment laws. Manage contracts related to services that are outsourced. Maintains relationships with labor and social security agencies and supports the Region in all local HR related matters.
  • Support and advice Expats/Impacts on all the requirements (contracts, visa, taxes, practical matters etc) related to their professional move, in coordination with counterparties in the other Area.
  • Supervises personnel costs, BU/FC preparation in comparison with actual. In case of deviations from the budget, give explanations and corrective actions.
  • Works closely with the regional specialist on process improvement and communications flows, budget and any other HR related matters.

 Qualifications:

  • 8 - 10 years' experience in similar role
  • University Degree in Business administration, Human Resources or equivalent.
  • Language requirements: English & French are a must, while Portuguese is a plus. 
  • Vast experience in a shipping company or an adjacent industry.
  • Proven leadership experience having successfully managed medium or large teams. Good ability to inspire and motivate people.
  • High customer and results orientation coupled with outstanding communication skills.
  • Knowledge of legal documents, international trade and business processes.
  • Excellent knowledge in the applicable labor law.
  • English fluency or advanced level.
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationships.
  • Experience and knowledge on Budget / HR Overhead development and control
  • Experience and knowledge on Compensation & Benefits management
  • Experience and knowledge on Organizational Development Topics (Performance Mgmt., Talent
    Development, Training, etc.).
  • Willingness to travel frequently.
