Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT) is the new Terminal & Infrastructure Division of Hapag-Lloyd, founded in 2023. HGT delivers streamlined terminal operations for all shipping line customers and brings together a portfolio of 20 port terminals and complementary logistics services in 11 countries and on four continents: Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa. The position

We are seeking an experienced Director of Technology and Engineering to lead and develop 
our equipment and maintenance & repair (M&R) function.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment and M&R Leadership:

  • Lead the maintenance and repair (M&R) function, ensuring best practices in preventive and 
    corrective maintenance as well as breakdown management to maximize uptime and 
    operational efficiency.
  • Develop, implement and govern technical standards, procedures, guidelines and key 
    performance indicators (KPIs) to optimize long-term availability, reliability and cost effectiveness of terminal equipment deployment.
  • Identify and implement best-in-class maintenance technologies and methodologies to 
    enhance equipment performance.
  • Identify and drive innovation and automation initiatives, including verification of local 
    initiatives to improve efficiency.

Technical Expertise & Operations:

  • Provide deep technical expertise in container terminal equipment, including cranes, reach 
    stackers, terminal tractors, and other heavy machinery. Expertise to cover structural, 
    mechanical, and electrical disciplines.
  • Drive effective management M&R related control systems like CMS, CMMS, SCADA and 
    other digital monitoring solutions.
  • Ensure that equipment fleets support commercial and operational demands.
  • Develop and manage partnerships with equipment manufacturers, service providers, and 
    technology vendors to ensure optimal service levels.
  • Actively collaborates with other functions closely related like HSSE, Operations, Civil and, where applicable, Project Development.
  • Oversees procurement main equipment from specification to hand-over to operations.

Strategic Development & Transition Management:

  • Develop, implement and govern comprehensive strategies for efficient equipment 
    procurement, deployment and disposal (life cycle management) both on a corporate and 
    business unit level.
  • Assess and develop internal capabilities to reduce dependency on external consultants 
    over time, while maintaining flexibility for ad hoc equipment related needs.
  • Build and mentor a team of equipment and M&R specialists, fostering a culture of technical 
    excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Develop guidelines for efficient workforce management, including the use of specific 
    software to optimize labor efficiency.
  • Coordinate relevant technical aspects of tenders to ensure the best solutions are 
    incorporated.
  • Coordinate and monitor equipment / M&R related efforts for projects and due diligences as needed, ensuring quality and compliance. 

Compliance, Safety & Sustainability:

  • Ensure all equipment-related operations comply with safety regulations, environmental 
    standards and other regulatory bodies.
  • Drive initiatives to enhance sustainability in equipment usage, including fuel efficiency, 
    electrification, and emission reduction strategies.
  • Support applications for grants / subsidies, targeting enhanced sustainability.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, 
    or a related field.
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in equipment management, maintenance, and repair 
    (M&R) within the container terminal, port operations, or heavy industrial sectors.
  • Deep technical expertise in container terminal equipment, maintenance methodologies, and reliability engineering.
  • Proven experience in leading M&R teams and optimizing maintenance strategies to improve equipment uptime and cost efficiency.
  • Strong knowledge of equipment lifecycle management, including procurement, commissioning, operations and decommissioning processes.
  • Experience working with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and third-party maintenance service providers.
  • Excellent problem-solving, project management, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and leadership capabilities, with the ability to work across multiple stakeholders.
  • Flexibility to travel domestically and internationally as required.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory; additional language skills (Spanish, German, or others) are a plus.
