Reports to Sr. Manager, Navigator Marine Ops

Overall Job Purpose:

  • Core responsibility to create partnership with terminals to drive significant operational enhancements, quality improvements and cost efficiencies by enabling the HL organization to react faster, by identifying and establishing corrective initiatives and measures and by monitoring terminal activities to analyse root causes closer
  • Actual implementation of improvement measures during vessel calls onsite.
  • Active improvement program management and operational supplier management.
  • Direct communication with terminal management to define and apply corrective actions immediately and ensure feedback of impact of measures and lessons learned towards Area/ Regional Ops Management and Terminal Control Tower, planning and execution.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement process

Key Accountabilities:

Analysis and monitoring:

  • Familiarize and become expert in own terminal performance analytics in alignment with global best practices
  • Based on data-based improvement potential, select focus ship systems to include into Terminal Partnering. This selection is revisited and extended regularly.
  • Constantly review and analyze available reports and information on terminal and vessel data and derive improvement hypotheses Interview planners, masters, terminal operators and other local partners for root cause analysis
  • Regularly observe arrival and berthing processes of selected vessels to detect any structural inefficiencies
  • Regularly observe cargo operations (incl. crane availability and productivity) for selected vessels to ensure alignment with expectation 
  • Ensure quality of relevant statistical data by spot checks and solving structural issues with responsible parties (both internal and external)
  • Prepare workshops/ discussions with Terminal Operators/ Terminal Management (e.g. presenting analysis output)

 Design and implementation of improvement levers: 

  • Design, align and track specific implementation levers for identified improvement initiatives with terminal operations
  • Ensure mutual understanding of measures to implement and responsibilities both externally at the terminal as well as internally with HL
  • Design improved processes to ensure seamless communication between HL, terminal and other vendors
  • Ensure applications of processes and act as escalation level for related issues
  • Design and implement measures to reduce demand of "terminal other cost" services (e.g. reefer, stowage ...)
  • Create management reports on Terminal analytics and performance to discuss with Terminal and HL management
  • Act as a support network and source of best practices for PSI/PSM colleagues at other terminals/ Coach new PSI/PSM that are assigned as buddy

Conducting Performance reviews:

  • Ensure continuous improvement through regular Performance Dialogues with the terminal
  • Act as escalation level for any issues with the terminal performance

Key meetings: 

  • Attend global training program and buddy support weeks
  • Involvement in all relevant local communication in relation with the vessel call
  • Organize and conduct meaningful weekly Performance Dialogues with the terminals
  • Organize and conduct status meetings and problem solving with HLAG stakeholders to check initiative progress
  • Participate in regular Impact Dialogues with regional Navigator and Terminal Partnering HQ to discuss forward looking activities
  • Participate in best-practice sharing session with ideas on better analyses or levers to optimize PSI/PSM impact globally

Qualification & Skills:

  • Vessel and/or Terminal planning experience required
  • Lean Six-Sigma knowledge and certification (Green Belt or equivalent cert.) required
  • Available onsite during actual vessel calls to oversee measure implementation
